Race day
F1 Austin first-timer: what do I need to know?
The short answer: it's a 3-day event, not a single race — Friday practice, Saturday practice plus qualifying, Sunday the Grand Prix — with support races, concerts, and fan zones filling the gaps. Arrive early every day, bring sun and ear protection, check the bag policy before you go, and don't skip Friday and Saturday — they're half the experience.
How the three days flow
- Friday: practice sessions (FP1, FP2), support-series action, the most relaxed day. Walk the whole circuit, find your sightlines, learn the fan zones. The track is at its emptiest and most explorable.
- Saturday: final practice then qualifying — the shootout for pole, and many fans' favorite on-track session. Crowds build. The evening concert is usually the biggest of the weekend.
- Sunday: race day. Support races in the morning, the driver parade, the anthem, the formation lap — then 56 laps. After the podium: the post-race track walk, the post-race concert, and the long, happy exodus.
The 2026 schedule, in Austin time
Friday Oct 23: Practice 1 at 12:30 PM, Practice 2 at 4:00 PM. Saturday Oct 24: Practice 3 at 12:30 PM, Qualifying at 4:00 PM. Sunday Oct 25: the Grand Prix at 3:00 PM (56 laps). New for 2026: Austin has no sprint race this year, and US streaming has moved to Apple TV - F1 TV Pro also carries every session if you're watching from home before or after a day at the track. Gates are published now: Friday 9:00 AM, Saturday and Sunday 8:30 AM — and Thursday's Grand PrixView gates open 11:30 AM.
The first-timer checklist
- Tickets in your phone wallet. Don't rely on cell service at the gate — move tickets into Apple/Google Wallet on Wi-Fi before you go (screenshots of barcodes may not scan), and save your parking assignment and entry directions offline. Phone survival at COTA →
- Sun protection. Austin in October is still hot and the grandstand roofs don't cover everyone. Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses — non-negotiable. October weather →
- Ear protection. Modern F1 cars are quieter than the V8 era but still loud up close, and support series are properly loud. Foam plugs are cheap insurance.
- Portable charger. Photos, timing apps, and coordination drain batteries; outlets are scarce.
- A physical card, not just your phone. COTA is a cashless venue with no ATMs — cards rule, and a dead phone takes your mobile wallet with it. Why your phone needs a plan →
- Check the bag policy. It changes year to year — what you can bring →
- Download the timing app. Live timing on your phone turns "cars going around" into actually following the race.
Track craft: how the veterans actually watch
Collected from veteran COTA guides — the small moves that separate a good weekend from a great one:
- Eat during a session, not between sessions. While cars are running, the concourses empty; the moment a session ends, every food line triples. Trade ten minutes of track time for forty minutes of not queueing.
- Walk the perimeter on Friday and pick your Sunday spot then. You can walk the circuit's perimeter paths — Friday is reconnaissance: find the corner you actually want to watch from before 140,000 people form opinions about it.
- Use the free internal tram. Fan guides note a tram runs loops inside the circuit. Most first-timers never learn it exists — it's the difference between exploring the place and marching across it.
- Bring an FM radio or a headset. Trackside commentary turns a distant train of cars into a race you can follow — and the headsets they sell at the track come at track prices.
- Learn the T-cams and the numbers. The colored camera pod above each car's airbox (and the driver's number) is how you tell teammates apart at speed without a timing tower. Five minutes with the entry list on Friday pays off all Sunday.
Rookie mistakes to skip
- Showing up only for Sunday. You've paid for three days of travel — use them.
- No plan for the exit. 140,000 people leave at once. Have a plan before the lights go out. The traffic playbook →
- Ignoring the support races. The junior series put on some of the best racing of the weekend — and the grandstands are empty for them.
- Dehydration. Texas heat + walking miles + excitement = the medical tent. Drink water like it's your job.
