Race week

What is Grand PrixView Thursday at COTA — and should I go?

The short answer: Grand PrixView Thursday is new for 2026 — COTA opens a day early, on Thursday October 22, with F1 Academy on track, the F1 Fan Zone before the crowds, and the thing regular fans almost never get: a walk down the F1 pit lane. If you hold a 3-day ticket or hospitality package bought directly from COTA, Thursday is free — but you have to claim it in advance; it is not automatic. No weekend ticket? A standalone Thursday ticket is $20+ on COTA's ticket page. Yes, you should go — if you claim it before it's gone. One change since last week: COTA's ticket page no longer restates the free claim for 3-day holders, so check your COTA account now to confirm yours is in hand rather than assuming it.

What you actually get on Thursday

  • The F1 pit lane walk. The headline. Fans in attendance can walk F1 Pit Lane — in recent years, a pit lane walk has not been offered to general ticket holders at Austin at all. Thursday is the one day the velvet rope comes down for everyone.
  • F1 Academy, up close and on track. The circuit opens early for F1 Academy: step into the Academy paddock and watch the drivers prepare, and the cars run — practice and qualifying are on the Thursday broadcast schedule, in the afternoon.
  • The Fan Zone and the villages, empty. First access to the F1 Fan Zone, plus COTA's villages — La Cantina, The Ranch, Lonestar Land — a day before 140,000 people arrive.
  • COTALAND without the lines. COTA bills Thursday as "a no-lines day" at its new theme park next door (COTALAND admission is sold separately).

Thursday's running order

COTA has now published Thursday's schedule (official schedule, checked October 20, 2026; times subject to change):

  • Parking lots open 11:00 AM; gates open 11:30 AM.
  • F1 Academy practice: 12:25–1:05 PM.
  • Pirelli hot laps: 1:20–1:50 PM.
  • Pit lane walk: 2:00–4:00 PM.
  • F1 Academy qualifying: 4:30–5:00 PM.

Between sessions the Fan Zone, the villages, and COTALAND (separate admission) are open — without the weekend crowds.

The catch: free does not mean automatic — claim it

This is the mechanic fans will miss, so read it twice. In COTA's words: current 3-day ticket and 3-day hospitality holders can claim their Grand PrixView Thursday ticket for free — but the claim is a step you take, not a perk that lands in your account, and COTA's fine print limits the free claim to tickets purchased directly through Circuit of The Americas. If you bought your 3-day pass through a reseller, check your COTA account carefully — or just buy the $20+ standalone and stop worrying.

Do the claim now, not at the gate Race week is already moving — downtown fan events started Monday. If your Thursday ticket isn't sitting in your account before you leave for Austin, assume the pit lane walk is the thing you'll be watching other people post about.

Shop without the crowds: Thursday is merch day

COTA markets Thursday as the day to "shop without the crowds," and the fan logic is sound: official merchandise at the track is consistently more expensive than online, the popular sizes sell out by Saturday, and the lines at the main stores on race day are their own event. Thursday also stacks with the downtown merch map — the Williams Fan Zone's Austin-edition gear, the Haas Godzilla collection (on sale from Monday, in person at the Domain reveal on Thursday), and the Lando pop-up on San Jacinto. Should you go?

  • 3-day holder who bought direct from COTA: claim it. It costs nothing but the click, and the pit lane walk alone is worth a half-day.
  • 3-day holder who bought resale: the $20+ standalone is still cheap insurance for the pit lane — decide before Thursday, not during.
  • No weekend ticket (or Sunday-only): $20+ for a pit lane walk, F1 Academy running, and the Fan Zone is the best-value ticket of the entire week — cheaper than Friday GA by a wide margin.
  • Skip it if: you're flying in Friday and can't move the flight. Everything else Thursday offers repeats across the weekend — except the crowd levels.
Grand PrixView details — inclusions, the free-claim mechanic and its direct-purchase condition, and the $20 standalone price — verified October 19, 2026 against COTA's official Grand PrixView Thursday ticket page (circuitoftheamericas.com), corroborated by RACER (July 23, 2026). A higher Thursday price seen on one third-party listing is not COTA's price and is not printed here. Thursday gate and session times are from COTA's official schedule, checked October 20, 2026.
