Race day

Can I go on the track after the race at COTA?

The short answer: yes — after the Grand Prix on Sunday, COTA opens the track for a sanctioned post-race walk on the starting grid between Turn 20 and Turn 2 — COTA's official description — so you can watch the podium ceremony standing on the circuit itself. COTA names three entry points: Turn 2, Main Grandstand East, and Main Grandstand West (fan guides list Turn 1 and Turn 19 as well). The one rule that matters in 2026: wait for the gates to open. COTA is still inside the probation window of a €500,000 FIA fine from 2024's early invasion — this is not the year to freelance.

How the track walk works

  • Where: the starting grid — the main-straight stretch between Turn 20 and Turn 2, in front of the Main Grandstand and the podium (per COTA's official page, checked October 20, 2026). This is a podium-viewing walk, not a lap of the circuit: you're there to see the trophies from the track.
  • When: after the race, once the gates open. There is no published clock time — the trigger is the officials opening the entry points, not the checkered flag.
  • The finish-line moment: fans who've done it report signing their name on the finish line itself (fan-reported — treat it as a possibility, not a promise, and bring nothing that marks the surface permanently).
  • Already in the Main Grandstand? You can watch the podium from your seat without moving a step. The walk is for everyone else — and for the feeling of standing where the cars were.

The entry points

COTA's official Know Before You Go page (checked October 20, 2026) names Turn 2, Main Grandstand East, and Main Grandstand West; GPDestinations' trackside guide (updated October 5, 2026) adds Turn 1 and Turn 19. The full list:

  • Turn 1 — the closest point for the Turn 1 hill GA crowd.
  • Turn 2 — the second gate on the climb.
  • Main Grandstand East and Main Grandstand West — for grandstand and infield fans.
  • Turn 19 — the far end of the straight; usually the least crowded way in.

Position yourself near one of these before the final laps. When the gates open, the crowd moves as one — being fifty yards away beats being five hundred.

Why "wait for the gates" is real advice in 2026

In 2024, roughly 200 fans climbed onto the track early — while cars were still on their cooldown laps — via a hole in the fence on the start-finish straight. The FIA fined the promoter €500,000, with €350,000 of it suspended until December 31, 2026, on condition there are no further mass incursions at COTA. Read that date again: the 2026 race is inside the suspension window. Another early invasion doesn't just get fans removed — it triggers the suspended fine and likely ends the sanctioned track walk for everyone, this year and after. The sanctioned walk is a privilege the track is still on probation for. Wait for the gates.

The Sunday choice: track walk, Alesso, or the first wave out

All three happen in the same post-race hour, and you can only pick one. The track walk gives you the podium from the asphalt and the slowest, calmest exit of the day afterward. The Alesso post-race show at the Germania Amphitheater trades the track for the party — and also dodges the exodus. Leaving at the flag means the first wave of 140,000 people. Our order: track walk first (it's the ritual you can't buy back), concert second, first wave never. The concert math, in full →

Photo spots, while you're thinking about Sunday

  • The main straight, from the track. The track walk itself — podium, grandstand, and the hill behind you.
  • The Turn 1 hill. The landscape shot of the circuit: the climb, the stadium section, the first-lap chaos on Sunday.
  • The COTA Tower. The observation deck over the whole property. COTA now publishes the price: $40 from the base of the tower on Grand Prix weekend, with a $20 champagne-toast add-on, and 2026 hours are published too — Sunday's deck runs 11:00 AM–6:00 PM (Know Before You Go page, checked October 20, 2026).
  • The CO_A letters at the main entrance — pose as the missing T. You will. Everyone does.
  • Turn 9 grandstand, with the Ferris wheel in frame — the postcard composition.
Camera rules that change your packing list Per COTA's official venue policies: personal cameras are welcome — but tripods, bipods, and monopods are not permitted, and detachable telephoto lenses are not permitted within the gates. Leave the big glass at home; a fast standard zoom and your phone are the kit that gets in.
Track-walk details (main straight, five entry points) per GPDestinations' COTA Trackside guide, updated October 5, 2026; the 2024 fine and its December 31, 2026 suspension per the FIA stewards' decision document and Autosport's reporting; camera rules per COTA's official Venue Policies; tower price is fan-reported (GPDestinations, October 2026) — COTA publishes no official tower price. All checked October 19, 2026.
